Artist's Description

This is Chatsworth the desert tortoise who lives at my brother's house in Southern California. Chatsworth is 18 years old. When he was adopted he was about the size of a silver dollar. Today his shell measures about 12 inches across by about 18 long.

My brother works with animals in SOCAL and adopted this desert tortoise from a public agency that focuses on this threatened species whose habitat is limited to the Palm Springs desert region. He holds has the birth certificate and permit for Chatsworth from Fish and Wildlife.

The unique adoption program for desert tortoises helps protect them from loss of life by advancing real estate development into their desert habitat, and by irresponsible drivers of off-road vehicles who inadvertently kill tortoises and/or their habitat.
