The wide variety of agricultural products are proudly offered by local farmers and producers. The people in the market - buyers and sellers - are as varied in colour and temperature as the food they have come for, and despite all the queuing, elbowing, and nudging everyone is courteous.
One wonders if the French invented the chalk and slate signs to inform their customers of the products and prices both on their market tables and in their cafes and restaurants. The calligraphy is a type of art in itself.
Gary Karlsen is a writer and amateur photographer.
