Artist's Description

This huge iron door is one of a pair at Porte San Pietro, the western entrance to the old walled city of Lucca in Italy. Once entry was gained through this portal, either by foot through the smaller door, or by horse and carriage with both full size gates open, there is a vestibule or antechamber. The portcullis must be lifted in order to gain access to the city of Lucca.
