Artist's Description

Filbert Trees near Agassiz, BC.

Filbert trees are cultivated hazelnut trees. They are common in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, Canada. We had a filbert tree and a walnut tree and a crabapple tree in our yard when we lived in Chilliwack many years ago.

We made a dry rose-like wine from the crabapples and the nuts we gathered from the ground below the trees in the fall and dried them in the basement. They were ready to eat by Christmas.

The nuts are very tasty but I would not want to be looking for them on this forest floor. Far too scary.
