Artist's Description

From Cypress Mountain we see the City of Vancouver right below us. On a clear day the sweeping view overlooks Simon Fraser University perched at the top of Burnaby mountain to the east, Mt Baker to the southeast, and to the west of the bridge, the outer harbour where there are always ships at anchor awaiting a berth at the Vancouver dockyards. The western view includes the University of British Columbia, the Gulf Islands - Canadian and American - and the mountains of Vancouver Island.

Gary Karlsen is a writer and amateur photographer. His rich and varied travels have included sailing the oceans of world on deep-sea freighters, circumnavigating North America by thumb, riding the rails across Canada, flying single engine airplanes into mountain lakes, traveling half the globe as a merchant mariner, and speaking at international conferences as an educator. He has travelled through careers in the construction industry, the teaching profession, and as a television producer.
