Artist's Description

The hilltop village of Seguret in the France's Luberon is an enchanting place with steep narrow streets that meander around this medieval city. This ancient fortified settlement had, at one time, nine entrances or portals. The southern one in this photo is much in decay. For a 14th century wooden structure, it is, in fact, quite well preserved. The plaque on the stone wall is inscribed with - Portail des Huguenots dit Portail Neuf.

As many of us know from our history books, the Huguenots were protestants who had abandoned catholicism. They were much persecuted. The Wars of Religion in France are well documented. For a concise treatment of this history I refer the intrepid traveler to Wikipedia.
